When I started the company in 2006, we defaulted to using “Fields Tyler Consulting” but that never felt quite right to me. 18 months in, when we realized we were actually going to make it as a business, we started the process of rethinking our name.
Concurrent to that, my husband Tom and I were involved in a sort of mid-life revisit of our values and goals. Part of that process was participating in a monthly conversation with like-minded couples all of whom were embarking on a similar journey. Through that process, I put down on paper a lot of big ideas, dreams, and goals — as well as a few big anxieties, failures, and fears. The phrase that kept resounding in my mind and heart like a persistent echo was “lean into the blue beyond — create the future you yearn for.” Without any intention or thought about our consulting business, I put all this down on paper and shared it with some close friends and colleagues — including folks on my team. Scrawled across the top of the page was: “Blue Beyond — Creating the Future We Yearn For.”
At a team meeting in my living room some time later, we were discussing what we should rename the company. “Out of the blue” — as the saying goes — someone said “I really love that Blue Beyond idea.” And quickly, a chorus of voices chimed in with enthusiastic assent. As I write this now, I still get the anxious feeling in my stomach I felt in that moment. It’s hard to say exactly why, but I think it has something to do with the power of the soul’s desire, once named, to feel simultaneously deeply true and utterly terrifying — in an audacious delusions-of-grandeur, caught-surprised-in-the-spotlight, how-dare-you kind of way.
What was it that called to me and called to my team in that moment? It’s many things. It’s about vision, the big canvas, a place of possibilities. But it’s also about where the sky meets the ground, setting out on a journey, about charting a course, going to the horizon, and then some. And for us, it’s about the intention we hold with and for our clients and for one another to look up from the confines of circumstance and see the realm of possibility — and then work like crazy to make possibility real.
Now, in our second decade as a company, what once felt like a hypothesis we needed to test has turned into a promise we intend to fulfill. Our new visual identity is all about us owning our own Blue Beyond, and stepping out to realize our vision and our potential as a company that is built to last, as we endeavor to help our clients do the same.
We are so truly and deeply honored to be of service to our clients during some of the most challenging and stretching times in their professional lives.

We hope we always show up as people who encourage you to helicopter up from your day-to-day to see the realm of possibility, advise you as you pick that dot-point on the horizon that is your destination, and help you with the roll-up-the-sleeves, grab-an-oar, do-whatever-it-takes know-how needed to realize your vision and achieve your goals.
