Collaborative. Authentic. Practical.
Mara joined Blue Beyond in June of 2015 as a consultant and has over 10 years of experience in communications, strategic planning, stakeholder engagement, and program management. Mara received a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin and an M.A. in Communication Management from USC. Mara’s previous work launching community relations for two professional sports teams taught her how to engage different stakeholders, both internal and external, and find champions to support new initiatives and change efforts. She later worked for a nonprofit organization, spearheading young adult outreach and engagement efforts, becoming skilled at strategic planning and board management, collaborating, breaking down silos, stakeholder communications, and storytelling. Mara is known for having strong management skills, remaining calm and confident despite any challenges, and building authentic relationships.
What skills and expertise do you bring to the team?
I am a seasoned communicator with strengths in relationship building, stakeholder engagement, strategic planning and program management. My Master’s in Communication Management, focusing on organizational and strategic communication, as well as my experience in both the nonprofit and for-profit sectors, allow me to bring a unique perspective to my work at BBC.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
I enjoy helping organizations create streamlined and efficient processes to more effectively communicate across a variety of audiences. I love being part of an entire strategic planning or change process from start to finish—from the visioning and planning stages, to facilitating and executing on the plans.
What is your favorite time of the year? Why?
My favorite time of year is Fall. I’m from Wisconsin, so Fall to me is apple picking and hot cider. It’s trees the color of fire, breathing in crisp air and leaves crunching under my feet. It’s brilliant sunshine and that final gasp of Summer. And of course, it’s football season (Go Packers!), and pumpkin everything and breaking out the sweaters and boots and cozying up next to a fireplace. Though I live in Southern California now, and I don’t get to experience seasons per se, the memories alone will always make Fall my favorite time of year.
How would you describe your co-workers?
In two words: pretty awesome. My co-workers are smart and funny, hard-working and creative, and perhaps most importantly, they are genuinely nice people. I could go on and on, but I think “pretty awesome” sums it up nicely.
If you could take the year off, what would you do?
As cliche as it is, my dream has always been to spend a year traveling around the world. I wouldn’t make set plans – I would stay somewhere as long as I felt like it, until I was ready to move on to the next place. I would spend a lot of time in nature, visiting places that are rapidly disappearing because of climate change and global warming. I would learn Spanish. I would take cooking lessons everywhere I could. And, I would read a lot.
