Empathetic. Conscientious. Creative.
After joining as an intern in October 2016, Lila became a full-time member of the marketing team in June 2017. Her primary roles are team managing social media channels, project managing content development and production, and other creative projects. Lila received a B.A. in Psychology from UC Davis with a minor in Film Studies. Lila’s past experience doing outreach, writing blogs, and learning how to collaborate and communicate with diverse groups of people as an intern at Art With Impact and UC Davis Student Health & Counseling Services helped prepare her for her work at Blue Beyond. Lila is complimented most on being reliable, responsible, ready to learn, and a strong writer.
What skills and expertise do you bring to the team?
During my senior year at UC Davis, I interned with the school’s health and counseling services, working alongside fellow students to raise awareness about mental health on campus. This experience made me realize how well I function as part of a diverse team of compassionate and driven people, who look out for one another’s needs, but also make sure everyone is staying on top of their responsibilities. It especially opened my eyes to how we all have a story to share, and to always approach others with kindness and an open mind. My experiences studying film strengthened my writing skills and my creative eye.
What do you find most rewarding about your work?
What I find most rewarding is doing work that engages both creativity and empathy. I enjoy work that allows me to try new things and gain a fresh skill set, and I have already learned and grown exponentially during my time at Blue Beyond.
What is the most important lesson you’ve learned in the last year?
Something that I really came to terms with during the summer after college is how important self-love is, as cliché as that may sound. Towards the end of my time in college, and especially after I graduated, I fell into a deep rut. It was one of the most difficult times of my life so far, but it forced me to reflect and come to a lot of hard, but necessary realizations about myself. I realized how much of my life I had spent doubting myself and how much this had held me back. I now know how important it is to value myself. I also became conscious of a need to have more patience and persistence within my own life, and this has already done wonders in reaching my goals.
What is your favorite question?
I love asking people what their favorite movie is. It’s common to view watching movies as a passive act, but I think it’s quite the opposite. If someone chooses to engage with a film, and is in a place where they can connect with it emotionally, it can have such a significant impact on them. I have learned so much about myself and the world around me from choosing to study film. That being said, I love to hear what movies have resonated with others, which movies mean the most to them, and why. It can be a great way to learn about other people, and it’s always fun to find someone with similar movie taste as yourself.
Name a peak experience in your life. What happened?
During the summer of 2015, I studied abroad in Switzerland and France. I had never been that far from home before, without my family or anyone I knew, and I was terrified. I worried that I would be homesick and that I wouldn’t be able to get comfortable with all of the change. I could not have been more wrong. It was the most fun I’d ever had and a special, important experience that I will always cherish. It made me realize how much I want to travel, to see beautiful places, have new experiences, and meet people I may never have met otherwise.
